So here, I list out some of the common occurrences of dating a Korean guy based on my personal experience and of the experiences of my lovely Korean girlfriends. In the crude social economy of heterosexual male expats living in South Korea, having a Korean girlfriend is a sort of measure of success. You can learn the language and forge all of the platonic friendships with locals that you like, but as far as anyone else is concerned in the expat scene you haven’t truly “arrived” until you have a Korean girlfriend or spouse. And so, under my pretense of wanting to improve my Korean speaking ability and under her pretense of wanting to improve her English, I met with a Korean college student who lived near me at a café located between our two apartments. The objective of our weeknight excursion was plainly for her to capture photographs documenting her new Caucasian romance, a series of contrived selfies of us beneath the white early April blossoms or in front of the twinkling backdrop of Haeundae Beach with its row of overpriced hotels. All of the photos were promptly posted to Facebook that evening. In Korea, coupledom is as much about the performance of coupledom as it is about dating itself.

In other words, what’s the point in dating unless you can really let everyone around you know that you’re dating, unless total strangers and Facebook friends alike can really feel the full force of your relationship? Every movie ticket purchased was photographed and uploaded so people could see that we had gone to see together and then that mediocre new Spiderman sequel (What ever happened to Tobey Maguire? Every daytime excursion to a strawberry farm in the countryside, the notes we wrote to each other and posted on the wall of a coffee shop near said strawberry farm, every shared bowl of flavored shaved ice, every hike, all of our various dating acts recorded and documented and posted in a bundle of photos on Facebook along with a succinct written summary of our activities, all of this information about our coupledom sent hurtling out headlong into the social media morass.

In this span of time, specific tasks will be assigned to them so they can break the ice and get cozy with each other.

Will they be able to overcome their cultural differences and perhaps even fall in love with each other?

Maybe because I thought it was just another romantic comedy.

The cover on the DVD looks that way, most of the blurbs I’ve seen say that it is – but it is not.

The other day, the highlight of which was the fact that you both went to sleep at 8pm (epic, I know), I settled on the sofa to watch TV.
